De las siete especies de tortugas marinas que existen en el mundo, seis habitan en México y cuatro anidan en las playas de la Península de Yucatán: la tortuga carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), la blanca (Chelonia mydas), la caguama (Caretta caretta), la lora (Lepidochelys kempii) la laúd (Dermochelys coriacea). Todas enfrentan alguna categoría de riesgo de extinción.
He tenido el privilegio de visitar algunos campamentos tortugueros donde he documentado de cerca los esfuerzos de conservación que organizaciones y comunidades locales llevan a cabo para proteger a estas especies milenarias. Cada fotografía en esta serie busca honrar esa labor y, al mismo tiempo, capturar la fuerza silenciosa de las tortugas, el cuidado humano detrás de su protección y la urgente belleza de su existencia.
Of the seven species of sea turtles that exist in the world, six are found in Mexico, and four nest on the beaches of the Yucatán Peninsula: the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the Kemp’s ridley turtle (Lepidochelys kempii), and the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). All of them face some category of extinction risk.
I have had the privilege of visiting several sea turtle conservation camps, where I closely documented the efforts carried out by organizations and local communities to protect these ancient species. Each photograph in this series seeks to honor that work, while capturing the silent strength of the turtles, the human care behind their protection, and the urgent beauty of their existence.
